Artist Profile – Ghostpatrol

We are a little late with this month’s artist profile due to the the fact that our move from Florida to New Jersey happened to coincide with the largest storm to ever hit the garden state.

Still, we’re back on track now.

For the month of November we are turning our attentions to the Australian artist Ghostpatrol.

I first met Ghostpatrol when we exhibited together in Berlin in 2006. The aspect that I remember most about him was his amazing work ethic. I’ve met a lot of artists that sometimes treat an exhibition overseas as a holiday as well as a working opportunity but not this guy. He was most definitely here to get things done. It shows. I honestly can’t imagine him ever going a whole day without picking up a pencil or a paint brush.

I remember a few years back thinking that his work reminded me of David Lynch’s films. It’s not so much that there is a dark undercurrent to his artwork or anything but more the fact that it seems to have a continuing narrative running through it that isn’t necessarily fully explained to the observer but instead left open to their own interpretation. There are no firm conclusions to the scenario’s depicted in the art.

Another aspect to his work that is pretty refreshing is the fact that he seems far more likely to pick up a pencil of a brush before he’ll resort to the digital world of pixels and creative software. In an age where many illustrators leap for the mouse and the drawing tablet like there’s no tomorrow-myself included-I find that reassuring.

Ghostpatrol. He draws more than you do.
