Who is William Onyeabor?

I came across an amazing documentary recently.

‘Fantastic Man’ is a documentary investigating Nigerian musician William Onyeabor. He is a man shrouded in mystery. He is the creator of a series of intrigueing multi instrumental albums which seem to have come out of nowhere in between the late seventies to the mid eighties.

His legacy seems to raise more questions than it presents answers. Least of all, where and how did he get all those crazy synths and keyboards?

How did he create such a unique sound and why is there so little information known about him?

Directed by Jake Sumner (Alldayeveryday) the film tells the story of a label’s attempt to track William down in a bid to find out more about his background and story and to try to separate the man from the myth.

The documentary features interviews with Damon Albarn, Caribou and Femi Kuti as the film makers travel to Nigeria to meet those who’ve worked with him in a bid to uncover a true picture of this mysterious artist. Watch below
